Sparky helps kick off celebrations for National Fire Prevention Week

The Guelph Fire Department and Guelph/Eramosa Fire Rescue will be hosting a free community event on Oct. 14 from 10am to 2:30pm at the West End Community Centre located at 21 Imperial Rd. South. 

The event will include fire extinguisher training, an inflatable fire safety house for children to understand the importance of smoke alarm activation and escape planning, cooking fire demonstrations and a live fire demonstration at 2pm. Food will be available for purchase on site and there will activities for all ages, including photo opportunities with Sparky the fire dog.

Centre Wellington Fire and Rescue will be hosting an open house Oct. 14 from 11am to 2pm at the CW Fire Dept. Station 60 located at 72 Wellington County Road 7. 

The free event will include appearances by the RCMP and Sparky the fire dog. The Fergus Pipe band will give a special performance at 1:00pm and a food truck will be on site. For more information follow CW Fire Rescue on Twitter or Facebook. 

The Wellington North Fire Services will be celebrating fire prevention all month, holding contests including trivia Tuesday’s and an online colouring contest. Their culminating event is a virtual All-Time Best Spaghetti Supper Cooking Class which can be found on eventbrite.ca.

Residents are invited to cook a family dinner together with a grocery list sent out the week prior to the live class held via Zoom. The class will feature two red seal chefs who will discuss cooking safety and walk participants through the steps on how to prepare the meal.

The Town of Erin Fire and Emergency Services will have a tanker and pumper truck set up just inside the entrance of the the Erin Fall Fair Oct. 7 – 8. 

Chief fire prevention officer Ted Michael told the Advertiser there would be a portable water tank set up on site for kids to try spraying a fire hose. 

There will also be an auto  extrication demonstration using the jaws of life, showing how firefighters rescue someone trapped inside a vehicle. The demonstration will include live narration as a driver and passenger are safely removed. 

Michael also encourages the public to have smoke alarms regularly tested. 

Puslinch Fire Rescue will be hosting an open host on Oct. 28 from 8:30 to 11:30am at the Puslinch Fire Hall. The event will begin with a free breakfast and will include fire truck tours and the opportunity to meet the firefighters.

The day will be joined by Pluggie and Sparky and will also have an antique fire pumper and firefighter skills demonstrations.
