Southgate could provide $125,000 for use of sports complex

KENILWORTH – Southgate Township is anticipated to continue providing an annual contribution to Wellington North for its residents’ use of the Mount Forest Sports Complex for ice sports.

Wellington North will receive an annual contribution of $25,000 from 2024-28.

Use of the rink rebounded in 2023, according to a report from township CAO Brooke Lambert.

Ice time hit was upwards of 2,000 hours across 785 sessions, thanks largely to minor sports use. The ice is used an average of 67 hours weekly.

Mount Forest Minor Hockey is the heaviest user of the complex, with around 350 kids using the ice each season.

According to Lambert’s report, the facility generated a preliminary total of $369,763 in revenue with expenses totalling $649,487 in 2023.

Last year, the auditorium and all dressing rooms were painted, automated defibrillators were replaced, two coolers were purchased, and the upper leisure hall was converted into office space.

The report stated around 15 per cent of registrations for a summer day program were from residents outside of Wellington North, including 7% from Southgate.

Southgate’s annual contribution is dependent on council approval there.
