Society looking to add plaques to historical buildings

MAPLETON – In some towns and villages, you can walk down the main streets and find historical plaques on older buildings, telling the story of what sort of industry was once in that location.

The Mapleton Historical Society would like to do the same for older buildings in Drayton, Moorefield and Alma. These informative plaques would not tell the history of the current business, but of the building.

Many small villages used to have several hotels, a variety of shops and businesses, and there perhaps are other fascinating details that are only remembered by the history books.

“The Historical Society would like to keep that history alive, while making a stroll through the downtown areas interesting and educational,” society officials state.

A good example of this type of historical recording can be found on the front of Heritage Funeral Home in downtown Drayton.

Anyone who would like to have a plaque on their downtown building, is urged to contact the Mapleton Historical Society.

There is no cost to building owners and the historical society will do all the research and work. Officials hope to complete half a dozen every year, as funds allow, noting there are grants available for ideas like this.
