Seniors benefit from federal support for community-based projects in Guelph

GUELPH – Since the beginning of the pandemic the federal government has provided COVID-19-related supports and benefits.  

On May 25, Guelph MP Lloyd Longfield, on behalf of Canada’s Minister of Seniors Kamal Khera, announced an investment of $137,540 for seven community-based projects. 

“Through the New Horizons for Seniors Program, the Government of Canada is providing a wide range of opportunities for seniors in Guelph to participate in meaningful activities that nurture their personal growth and foster inclusivity and community vitality,” Longfield said.   

This funding was awarded through the most recent call for proposals for community-based projects through the New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP).

The seven projects include:

– Guelph Community Health Centre receives $17,200 in funding for the Creative Conversations program to involve seniors alongside youth in gardening and food preparation;

– Guelph Chinese Canadian Cultural Group receives $20,000  in fund for the Forever Young program to involve seniors in virtual and in person social and physical activities as well as informational sessions;

– Guelph Public Library receives $25,000 in funding for the Knitting Connections program where seniors will create knit goods for newborns while engaging in discussions around technology and fraud prevention in various information sessions;

– Hospice Wellington receives $14,000 in funding to engage seniors in workshops focusing on exercise and overall well-being;

– Kindle Communities Organization receives $22,850 in funding to purchase raised garden beds, benches and equipment to allow seniors to grow food while engaging and socializing around horticulture; 

– Priory Park Baptist Church receives $13,490  in funding for the Shelter and Rainwater Harvesting project to extend their accessible garden and outdoor activities to support social participation and inclusion of seniors; and 

– The City of Guelph will receive $25,000 to retrofit the West End Community centre fitness room to allow seniors to be active in fitness, nutrition and mindfulness programming.
