June 8 marked the end of an era as Perth-Wellington Conservative MP Gary Schellenberger delivered his final statement in the House of Commons.
Schellenberger, who turns 72 next September, said in his address he has had the pleasure of working with the staff of the House of Commons, foreign diplomats, and public service since entering federal politics after a dozen years on municipal council in Downie Township.
“I would like to thank my colleagues on both sides of this House for their help and support along the way. I thank my staff, both here and at home, some of whom have been with me since I was first elected,” said the MP, who also recognized Les Broadfoot for suggesting he go into politics.
“And I cannot begin to express my thanks to my wife, Judy, and our family, who have been at my side throughout this journey. I will always remain indebted to my constituents for their faith in me these past 12 years,” he continued.
“It has been a great honour to serve Canada in this House.”
Schellenberger announced last September he would not seek re-election.
