Rockwood author’s book celebrates solar eclipse

ROCKWOOD – The recent solar eclipse made shadows dance and gave monarch butterflies and lunar moths an unlikely chance to meet, as the sudden darkness meant nocturnal and diurnal creatures were awake at the same time.

That’s the premise of Rockwood writer and illustrator Vanessa Ireson’s newest book, When Sun Met Moon.

“I was so intrigued by the eclipse,” Ireson told the Advertiser, “so I did a lot of research.”

What she found most fascinating was how the eclipse would affect creatures in nature.

Those usually awake during the day became sleepy, while nocturnal creatures woke briefly, and Ireson imagined them dancing together while the shadow bands caused by the eclipse waved and shimmered, until the total eclipse passed, and the creatures “went back to their normal routines, maybe to never meet again,” she said.
