Riders, supporters make Food Cycle Ride a success

Through personal donations and pledges from supporters, 125 cyclists in the Food Cycle Ride raised over $8,000.

This was matched with $6,000 from BMO Nesbitt Burns, making the final total approximately $14,500.

With the cost of the event covered by registration fees and donations from corporate and community sponsors, all of this money will go to the Centre Wellington Food Bank for use in its community kitchen.

The inclusion of teams this year, a new category, accounted for over 40 per cent of the funds raised.

Competition was close in all four award categories, and each received a plaque from Ron Wilkins Jewellers. Dr. Eric Oh’s team topped the total team donations with over $1,500. Colin Thomson’s Elora Racquets and Fitness Club team won for most team riders (14), and raised over $1,300. Gary Thomson of Guelph raised the highest in individual donations and the Herman Lavigne family led the donations raised by a family category.

Anytime Fitness in Fergus waived its introductory membership fee in favour of a $20 donation to the Food Cycle Ride, raising $600 in May.

Centre Wellington Food Bank officials expressed gratitude  to the “caring and giving community” that supports it in so many ways.
