Quilley family hosting benefit concert for Ukraine

ELORA – Four Elora youth, plus a few special guests, are putting on a benefit concert at the Elora Legion Saturday evening.

Proceeds will go to the Canadian Red Cross efforts for Ukraine, and a GoFundMe campaign to bring at-risk women and girls from Ukraine to Canada.

The evening promises a mix of Celtic, Irish, traditional and east coast music, with fiddles, accordion, guitar, whistles, and dancing.

Organizing the concert is the Quilley family: Arlo, 17, Tuuli and Romy, 12, and Jem, 16, along with their parents Steve and Nikki.

“They are very upset about events in Ukraine,” Steve said in a phone interview.

“There are lots of graphic images, people trying to leave. I think it was Tuuli who chirped up, ‘Let’s do a benefit.’”

The kids are not pros, Steve said, but they are pretty good and play under the stage name Glowan.

They got into east coast music through Leahy music camps for kids and the Rollo Bay Fiddle Festival.

“They were playing a lot until COVID. This is the first they’ve played in two years,” Steve added.

Joining the lineup are fiddler Anna Smilek, singer/guitarist Brad Fedy, and international Celtic guitarist Tony McManus.

The concert is slated for 7pm on March 26 at the Elora Legion. Donations will be accepted at the door.
