Public health officials encourage flu shots

Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) is reminding the public that along with the arrival of autumn and the vibrant spectacle of changing leaves, another season has also arrived – flu season.

Influenza, commonly referred to as the flu, is a serious respiratory infection that spreads rapidly from person-to-person and can lead to pneumonia, hospitalization and, in severe cases, even death. Public health encourages everyone to get the flu shot and stay protected this flu season.

“Getting the flu shot is the best protection against the flu,” said Dr. Nicola Mercer, medical officer of health and CEO for WDGPH in a press release.

“Those most at risk of the flu include the elderly, pregnant women, people with underlying health conditions and children under five years of age. Not only will getting the shot help you stay well, it will help protect those around you who may be at a greater risk of contracting the virus.”

Getting a flu shot is easy. Visit a public health flu clinic, make an family physician appointment or visit a local pharmacy.

The most common symptoms of the flu are fever and cough. In most cases, individuals are sick with the flu for two to 10 days. The flu can leave individuals very sick and bedridden often resulting in missed school or work.

“This year, get protected against flu season. Get the flu shot and stay well,” officials urge.
