Public health: flu season is here
There has been a laboratory-confirmed case of influenza B in Guelph, according to the local public health unit.
This is the first evidence this season that the flu is circulating in the community.
Public health urges those who have not already received a flu shot to do so soon.
The flu shot is recommended for everyone six months of age and older, including those considered at high risk of complications from the flu (children under five, adults over 65, and those with underlying medical conditions).
The flu vaccine is strongly recommended for anyone who could transmit the flu to individuals who are at high risk of complications.
It’s available at many pharmacies, from family doctors and from public health.

Adults aged 65 and older may be interested in a flu vaccine that is specially formatted for older adults.
Unlike the standard flu vaccine, which is free, “Fluzone High-Dose” for this older age group costs $80 and is available by appointment from Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (call 1-800-265-7293) or from a physician by prescription.
