GUELPH – Puslinch residents should anticipate some traffic delays as road construction is slated to begin on Wellington Road 35 in June.
During a roads committee meeting on May 13, staff presented a tender award for road construction on Wellington Road 35, from Wellington Road 34 to Gore Road.
“I would suspect that the contractor would like to start work in June and will be finished at the latest by October,” county manager of roads Joe De Koning told the Advertiser.
The work includes a full-depth recycling of the road base with expanded asphalt stabilization, one lift of hot mix asphalt and pavement markings and some intersection improvements.
According to the report, the road will remain open to one lane of traffic during construction and delays should be expected.
On May 7, six submissions were received from contractors, ranging from $2.01 to $2.72 million.
Staff recommended awarding the contract to the lowest compliant bidder: Cambridge-based Brantco Construction, for $2.01 million excluding 13 per cent HST.
The highest bid of $2.72 million was from Petersburg-based GIP Paving Inc.
“There will be no road closures. Traffic will be controlled by the contractor,” De Koning said. “Delays should be expected but no detour is required.”
The project will be funded in various ways, with the roads capital reserve accounting for $2,580,000 and Canada Community Building Fund for $670,000.
Other funding includes $25,000 from the 2024 capital budget.
Costs include the tender, professional fees, construction costs to date, provision to award if required, utility relocates and a contingency of $173,200.
The report notes the provisional items in the tender are to re-grade the vertical realignment of the road north of Paddock Bridge to satisfy the requirements of the Grand River Conservation Authority, including the replacement of a culvert in the area along with driveway paving.
The roads committee reviewed the tender amount and recommended council approval.
