‘Pick Up the Tab’ initiative supports Elora Legion’s Tabs 4 Wheelchairs project

GUELPH – The Elora Legion is once again partnering with Sleeman Breweries, the Guelph Storm Hockey Club, and the Guelph Community Foundation to collect aluminium tabs.

The initiative, called Sleeman Pick Up the Tab supports the Legion’s Tabs 4 Wheelchairs project, which launched in 1988.

The Legion sells the tabs, from pop and beer cans, to a recycling company and then  uses the money to purchase wheelchairs, walkers and other mobility devices.

“Aluminum can tabs are 100% recyclable. Tabs collected through this initiative will be recycled and provide funds for wheelchairs and other mobility devices. A true win/win,” said Sleeman spokesperson Sue Keuhl.

In the 36 years since the project’s launch, the Elora Legion has given away almost 3,000 wheelchairs to people across Canada.

The Legion first partnered with Guelph Storm and Sleeman Breweries for Pick Up the Tab during the 2018-19 hockey season, Keuhl told the Advertiser.

Pick Up the Tab is a contest: winners will receive two tickets to the Guelph Storm game on March 1, with seats in the Sleeman Box, and one delegate representing each winner will be invited onto the ice for the ceremonial puck drop at that game.

The winners will be the individuals or groups with the heaviest collection of tabs in each of the following  three categories:

  • non-profit, service group or community group;
  • business, office, or profit organization; and
  • individual or pair of people.

Winners in the first two categories will also win a $2,000 donation to a non-profit charity of their choice, and winners in the third category will win a $500 donation to a non-profit of their choice. The donation funds are provided by the Guelph Community Foundation.

To be included in the contest, collections of tabs must be submitted by Feb. 24 to either the Sleeman retail store at 551 Clair Rd. West, Guelph or the Elora Legion at 110 Metcalfe St., Elora.

“Last year’s Sleeman Pick Up the Tab event brought in 650 pounds of tabs,” Keuhl said, and 118 pounds has already been collected this year.

“We look forward to receiving more tabs for our March 1st game when we will celebrate and thank fans for their participation.”

The individuals, organization, and business that collect the most tabs are invited on the ice for the puck drop during the Pick Up the Tab Guelph Storm hockey game.
