Park expansion moving forward

The expansion of Rockmosa park in Rockwood continues to move forward.

Guelph-Eramosa council is working out final details that would incorporate a planned Catholic school, residential development and an expansion of Rockmosa park within a 22-acre parcel of land.

The expansion has moved several steps since it was first considered in 2012 and has involved public meetings and talks between the township, the Wellington Catholic District School Board, landowner Barb Bonner and Wellington County.

Council purchased the 22-acre parcel from Bonner for $375,000.

Mayor Chris White told the Advertiser after Tuesday evening’s council meeting that details have yet to be worked out on a site plan that will incorporate the school and a planned township road.

The county’s planning committee has already approved an official plan amendment to expand the Rockwood boundary and allow for the park expansion and school to proceed.

County council is expected to approve the amendment at its meeting on Feb. 27 with a 30-day appeal period before final approval is granted.

The township has for years considered altering the boundary in order to expand Rockmosa park in the village’s north end. The Catholic board has given the green light for construction of the $6 million school, expected to be completed next year.

White is hoping site plan details for the school will incorporate use of the gymnasium for the public. Details of whether a township street will be built in conjunction with the school will also be discussed.

“There could be some sort of a shared facility,” he said of possible public access to the gym. “It just makes sense to have a shared facility. I’d like to see it happen.”
