Open air burning in the Town of Erin

The Town of Erin has a process for approving open-air burning and below are a sample of some of the restrictions set out:

– the fire must be located at least 15 metres away from any building, structure, hedge, fence, road or overhead wire or obstruction of any kind;

– fires are prohibited during periods of dry conditions or drought or when prohibition is declared through bylaw;

– the dimension of the fire can’t exceed 0.3 cubic metres on urban properties;

– fires are prohibited between 9pm and 6am;

– fires are prohibited when the wind velocity exceeds 16 km/h;

– burning of leaves, garden waste, household garbage, tires, cardboard, paint, roofing materials is strictly prohibited; and

– any fire set under the bylaw can’t negatively impact neighbouring properties due to smoke or debris from the fire.

To obtain a burn permit visit the Town of Erin office located at 5684 Trafalgar Rd., RR2, Hillsburgh from Monday to Friday between 8:30am to 4:30pm. The burn permit is valid for up to one calendar year and costs $20.

Residents are responsible for compliance with the conditions of the permit and failure to do so may result in a fine as provided in the Provincial Offences Act or persecution in accordance with the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, 1997.
