Ontario announces more support for seniors”™ centres in Guelph

Ontario is helping Guelph seniors stay healthy, active and connected to their community.

The province is providing almost $110,000 to support the Evergreen Seniors’ Centre and the West End Community Centre.

Elderly persons centres, like the Evergreen and the West End provide social and recreational programs that promote wellness for seniors and offer them places to gather for activities like fitness and computer classes, as well as arts and crafts.

“Guelph’s seniors’ centres provide a broad range of programs and activities for seniors in our community. By supporting our seniors’ centres we can help seniors be active participants in their local community,” said Guelph MPP Liz Sandals.

This funding will help the centres maintain their operations and complete small renovations, such as:

– slip resistant mats, printing work to support age friendly communities, levers/locks/keys, tables, chairs, auto faucets, screen, white board and volunteer recognition for the Evergreen Seniors’ Centre; and

– a treadmill, recumbent bike, aquatic care attendant tools, age friendly designation, gym seating for senior programs, instructor rehab certification and rehab partnership with St. Joseph’s home for the West End Community Centre.

“Guelph has one of the most engaged and active seniors populations you will find anywhere.

This funding will help us build on that success,” said Guelph mayor Karen Farbridge.
