Swaving, Klaas – On January 5, 2013, Klaas Swaving was taken to be with his Lord. The family is comforted with words of 2 Timothy 4: 7. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith”. Klaas Swaving was born in Onnen, Gronningen, on February 4, 1926. As a young man he spent the last years of WWII in hiding. After the war, Klaas as eldest son was conscripted into the army and was sent to Indonesia. There he spent his time as a mechanic and ambulance driver. Upon his return to the Netherlands, he started a delivery service using a horse and wagon. On April 16, 1952, he married Ida Berends. They immigrated to Canada in February 1954 with one son. Klaas worked for a year on the Crawford Curtis farm in the Belwood area. He moved to Burlington and worked for the Burlington P.U.C. for 7 years. Klaas desired to be self-employed, so in 1963 he bought the Warmington farm in Belwood. Almost immediately he started a small welding enterprise. At age 61 he retired from this business, passing it down to some of his sons but still remained very active by doing deliveries and pick ups. This enterprise is still operating today by some of his grandchildren. We all know that he loved to travel the local roads and even close to the end they would take a trip each day even if it was for a stop at a Tim Hortons and then back home again.Opa will be fondly remembered by his children and grandchildren who greatly enjoyed his stories, his animals and his basement treasures! Klaas and Ida were blessed with 60 years of marriage.
