SPEERS, Verna Jean (Arthurs)

of Palmerston passed away on Friday, February 12, 2021 in her 84th year. Daughter of the late Harold and Helen (Chilton) Arthurs of Drew. Beloved wife of the late John Speers (2008). Special friend of the late Rudy Biel (2020). Cherished mother of Jo-Anne/Warren Caughill of Palmerston, Kevin/Tiona Speers of Clifford and Janna/Don Dodds of Wingham. Special Grandma, Great Grandma and Great Great Grandma to Brent/Ang Caughill (Ben & Johnny) of Palmerston; Catana & Zack Leslie (Blaire) of Harriston; Carla Caughill/Trevor Loos (Carter & Taylor) of Palmerston; Cora-Lee Crouse/Pete Lucas (Jacob, Lily, Emma) of Mount Forest, Rhiannon Speers & Kaity Speers of Clifford; Rachael Speers/Mike Grass (Aubrey & Cohen) of Palmerston; Eliza Dodds (Alice & Frankie) of St. Johns, Nfld. Also remembered by Warren’s Family Warren Jr/Jodi Cromwell (Nathan/Taylor, Autumn, Meghan) of Cambridge and Tim & Sue Caughill (Molly & Sarah) of Guelph. Survived by In-laws – Merle Arthurs of Belwood; Roger & Pat Simmons of Ingersoll; Gord Speers of Allan Park; Dorothy Speers of Elora; June Speers of Princeton; Jean Hoffmann of Waterloo. Predeceased by Sons Paul (1991) and Kirk (1960); Father & Mother In-Law Wesley & Clarissa (Cowan) Speers; Margaret (Connell) Speers; Brother – Lloyd Arthurs, Sister – Karen Simmons; In-laws – Frank Speers, Alex Speers, Jim Speers, Eleanor Taylor, Brunhilde Speers, Herb Hoffmann, Rev. Cameron Hill. Mom lived a very full life. Following completion of school, Mom worked at Canada Packers in Harriston; then moved from Drew to Palmerston in 1954, to become a farmer’s wife. They lived on the 10th Line of Wallace Township. Four children in 5 ½ yrs made for a busy life along with her coaching sports, umpiring baseball and being the biggest fan of her children and grandchildren. As well, Mom worked as a school bus driver then a VON Home Support Worker until retirement. Mom was Sunday School Secretary for many years and belonged to UCW; the Agricultural Society and the Hospital Auxiliary. Retirement consisted of morning coffee shop club, playing cards, camping, along with her favourite bus trips to the Casinos and her regular trips to Las Vegas. The Family would like to thank the Staff and Residents at the Royal Terrace for 7 ½ yrs of excellent care and friendship and her Doctors, Nurses and Palliative Team. A Private Family Service will be held in the Heritage Funeral Home, Palmerston on Friday, February 19, 2021.
