Hughes, George Owen (WWII Veteran and 4th Degree Knight of Walkerton Council), of Harriston, at Caressant Care Nursing Home, Harriston, on Monday, January 14, 2013, in his 97th year. George was born on January 17, 1916 in Waterloo, Ontario. Beloved husband of the late Adrienne Hughes (née O’Reilly). Dear father of Paul and his wife Bonnie of Harriston, Fred and his wife Elizabeth of Kitchener, George and his wife Helen of Barrie and Mark and his wife Elaine of Scarborough. Sadly missed by eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Predeceased by his son Jeffery, his parents, Dr. Frederick and Caroline (Fox) Hughes, his brother Fred (Connie) Hughes and his sister Mary (Harry Weir) (Walter Buck) and one brother and one sister in infancy. As old George worked 40 years with the Bank of Montreal he lived, made friends and was involved in many communities of which two were Elora and Meaford where he and Adrienne retired. Visitation was held at St. Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, Elora on Friday, January 18, from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the funeral mass at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. Fr. Rafal Tomon officiating. Serving as pallbearers were Robyn, Michael, Thomas, Stephen and Bradley Hughes, Susan Whyte, Patricia Riley and Lisa Cropper. Readers were Maggie Riley and Robyn Hughes. Interment, St. Mary Immaculate and St. Joseph Cemetery, Elora. Memorial donations to Community Living-Meaford or the charity of your choice would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
