Norwell girls win CWOSSA volleyball title

Fresh off  its win at the regional tournament on Feb. 26, the Norwell District Secondary School girls volleyball team will be travelling to Kenora on Sunday to compete in the OFSAA tournament.

Last Thursday the team played very well at the Central Western Ontario Secondary Schools Association tournament in Owen Sound, eventually defeating the host in the final.

“We knew we had the potential to win,” coach Jeff Shortt said on Monday. “It wasn’t a surprise, but it was never a sure thing.”

The girls actually lost the first game of the final to Owen Sound before rallying to win three close games in a row to take the title.

“We probably had our best games of the year exactly when we needed them,” Shortt said.

The win earned the Norwell girls a birth in next week’s Ontario Federation of School  Athletic Associations tournament, marking only the third time in school history a girl’ volleyball team has made it to OFSAA.

The  Redmen are also the only team from Wellington County to make it to the tournament this year.

The team will be flying to Winnipeg on March 8, and making the drive back across the Ontario-Manitoba border to  Kenora, where the tournament takes place.

The Norwell team will participate with 19 other teams on March 10 and 11, before returning home on March 12. The team has faced only one of those other teams thus far, but Shortt is familiar with several of them and he said the girls will have their work cut out for them.

“We’re playing against some very good teams,” Shortt said.
