During its meeting on Dec. 15, Wellington North council approved the construction of a 32-foot Bell telecommunications tower behind the fire station here at 103 Smith St.
The tower will help meet the increasing demand for high-quality, wireless service in Wellington North, while also serving as a receptor for municipal emergency services.
The number of base stations required to ensure adequate coverage and capacity is determined through extensive studies where factors such as vehicle patterns, population and physical characteristics of the region are considered.
Leading up to the decision to install the tower, some concerns were brought forward. The size of the structure’s pad was considered problematic as it could interfere with fire and EMS vehicles exiting and entering the rear of the fire hall. The pad size was reduced and now will not impede vehicles, the report states.
Other sites in the village were considered for the tower; one being behind the former Arthur municipal office, where there would be more space. However, Bell preferred the security of the fire hall location. Access to the tower and surrounding equipment will be available 24/7.
Bell will pay the township $12,000 annually for five years. The agreement can be renewed up to three times. Hydro is sub-metred and paid in addition to the rental fee.
Tower installation should be complete by early 2015.
