New picnic tables offer chance to enjoy gardens

In 2013 the Fergus Horticultural Society installed two picnic tables, one in the BT Corner park, and one in Templin Garden.

What a happy surprise to see how popular they have become.

On a nice day it is rare to go by without seeing them in use: sometimes a family having lunch, sometimes reading a book, sometimes having a chat or sometimes just catching a few rays.

This summer, the group decided to put in two more tables, both wheel-chair capable: a second in Templin Garden, and one in the newly resurrected “Riverside Garden” behind the TD bank on Tower Street.

The sturdy frames are the work of Fergus Welding, the cedar for the table tops and seats were scrounged from various left-over hydro posts, as well as cleared trees in the area, all masterfully cut and shaped on one of our member’s home sawmill. Thanks to creative use of materials and volunteer labour, the cost of the tables is minimal, and borne by some of the proceeds from our ever popular plant sale in May.

Next time you are in downtown Fergus, make sure to save a bit of time to find one of the picnic tables to sit at and enjoy our gardens.
