MP John Nater invites applications for Second World War Tribute program

PERTH-WELLINGTON – In conjunction with Veterans Affairs, local MP John Nater is inviting applications for the Second World War Tribute program,

To honour the bravery and sacrifice displayed more than 75 years ago, local Second World War veterans can apply for the Second World War Tribute. This commemorative lapel pin and certificate of recognition were created to honour the extraordinary role Canadians played in the Allied victory 75 years ago.

Anyone who is, or knows of , a Second World War veteran that would like to apply for this program may can contact Nater’s Office or apply directly on the Veterans Affairs website (link below): https://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/remembrance/wars-and-conflicts/second-world-war/tribute.

A Sept. 29 press release from Nater’s office notes there are roughly 30,000 living Canadian Second World War veterans.

The commemorative lapel pin is based on the “Victory Nickel”, a coin that was circulated during the war and re-issued in 2005, commemorating the 60th anniversary of V-E Day. The coin featured a flaming torch and large “V”, which stood for both “Victory” and the coin’s value in Roman numerals.

The Second World War Tribute program was launched in 2014 and will run until the end of 2020, roughly coinciding with the 75th anniversary of Canada’s engagement in the Second World War.

“Eight decades ago, brave Canadians answered the call to service and travelled overseas to fight against tyranny and hatred. Today, 75 years since the Second World War ended, it is important to honour our brave Veterans and pay tribute to those who are no longer with us,” Nater said.
