MINTO – Recipients of the proceeds of the upcoming 2022 Minto Mayor’s Charity Golf Tournament were presented to council on May 17.
Minto Pride and the town’s three downtown revitalization organizations: Clifford Connects, Harriston Rising and All Aboard Palmerston will be this year’s recipients.
Caitlyn Hall told council Minto Pride recently hosted a hike, attended by about 20 people, along White’s Junction Trail and is gearing up to host a Pride in the Park event at Lions Heritage Park in Palmerston from noon to 2pm on June 12.
Hall said the group is also involved in plans to install a rainbow crosswalk at the south end of Harriston.
“It’s a real visibility thing for people that are traveling through the town. It’s something that they can see and it gives off an impression of the Town of Minto as being a family friendly, inclusive, progressive type of place,” she added.
“So we’re really excited that that was passed by council and our committee is responsible to raise the funds to pay for the actual colour palette that will be used to paint the crosswalk the rainbow colors. So we were happy to be accepted as part of the recipient pool at the mayor’s golf tournament,” Hall stated.
Randy Ruetz of Clifford Connects said the organization is planning to put its share of the funds toward benches and picnic tables for Clifford Rotary Celebration Square.
“We just want to thank you, the mayor and, of course the Town of Minto, the organizers, for allowing Clifford Connects committee to be part of this year’s mayor golf tournament. It’s very much appreciated,” said Ruetz.
Glen Hall said Harriston Rising plans to put its allotment toward another large mural in the downtown area.
“We put a really big one on Foodland last year and this one will be going on Eric Cox (Wholesale) and it’s going to be very, very large. And it’s going to represent one core element of what I know Harrison and Minto stands for and that’s the sporting side of our community,” he explained.
Belinda Wick-Graham said the All Aboard Palmerston group haven’t designated the funds to one specific project.
“They just going to use it to keep going to all the great work that they’re doing around beautification and programming,” she explained.
Mayor George Bridge said organizers are hopeful the tournament can be held in traditional tournament style for the first time since 2019.
Through the pandemic, golfers have raised pledges and golfed in their own groups to support tournament causes.
“Fingers crossed the tournament this year will be the old style, which will be a shotgun start. And we’ll have the big meal at the end. So hopefully, the groups can be there at the end and also participate in the dinner and talk about your groups again and promote them,” said Bridge.
Over the past eleven years, the Mayor’s Charity Golf Tournament has raised over $117,000 and has assisted 38 local community groups with their financial expenses or events in the community.
The tournament is set for Aug. 4 at Pike Lake Golf Centre.
