Minto gets federal cash for Sports fields

Reconstruction of the Clifford soccer and ball fields will be assisted by a Federal grant of $54,500.

Perth-Wellington MP Gary Schellenberger announced, in a Jan. 10 press release, the town was successful in its application to the Canada Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).

The town applied last August for assistance through the program with the project, which is projected to cost approximately $176,000.

Minto Treasurer Gordon Duff said that leaves about $121,000 “to be financed from non-grant sources – basically from the Town and the Clifford Rotary Club.”

The town’s contribution will come from a portion of the proceeds of the $181,000 received by the municipality for the sale of the soccer and ball field land at Teviotdale, which will be the site of a new OPP building.

The new soccer and ball fields will be built on land acquired by the municipality from the Clifford Rotary Club. The town is planning to sell the existing ball field for residential development.

“After a comprehensive planning process last winter, the public strongly endorsed the improvements to the Clifford Sports fields,” said Mayor George Bridge.

“Federal funds supporting the investment by the town and the Rotary Club will make the facility better for all Minto residents, and help grow the community of Clifford.”

CIIF Funding was also announced for two other projects in Perth-Wellington. West Perth will receive $480,000 for an accessibility project at the Mitchell Arena and Community Centre and the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority will get $11,690 toward improvements to the swimming pool at the Wildwood Conservation Area near St. Marys,

“Our government is committed to creating jobs, growth, and long-term prosperity for Canadians through investments in our communities,” said Schellenberger.

“By improving facilities such as these, we are helping to boost economic activity and maintain a high quality of life for residents of all ages.”
