Minto community groups invited to apply for Mayor’s Charity Golf Tournament proceeds

MINTO – Applications are now open for community organizations seeking to share in the proceeds of the 13th annual Mayor’s Charity Golf Tournament here.

“Last year, we had a very full tournament and we’re hoping that this year’s event will be another great success,” organizing committee member Tawnya Robertson told council on Feb. 7.

“We look forward to supporting and assisting our local groups again this year.”

The tournament is set for Aug. 10 at Pike Lake Golf Centre Limited and applications for proceeds will close on March 13.

The tournament committee is looking for applications from non-profit organizations within the Town of Minto that fit into one of three categories: community betterment, service club or sports club.

Over the past 12 years, the Mayor’s Charity Golf Tournament has raised over $130,000 and assisted 42 local community groups with financial expenses or events, states a Feb. 7 press release from organizers.

Last year four organizations benefited from equal shares of the $14,000 proceeds of the tournament:

  • Minto Pride, which used the funds to install an inclusivity crosswalk in downtown Harriston; and
  • the town’s three downtown groups, All Aboard Palmerston, Clifford Connects and Harriston Rising, which used the funds for downtown beautification projects.

Over the years, funds have been used to replace playground equipment, purchase new sports equipment, assist a refugee family, support mental health initiatives and support the 2018 Canada Packers Reunion.

“If you know of any groups that are looking to raise funds for anything, maybe just let them know about this, because sometimes I think it slides under the radar a little bit,” Robertson urged.

Mayor Dave Turton noted spaces to play in the tournament often fill up quickly.

“I suggest anybody that’s interested needs to sign up early because it’s always fun,” said Turton.
