United Way Guelph Wellington Dufferin kicked-off its 2016 fundraising campaign on Sept. 8, announcing a goal of raising $3.6 million to support local social service programs.
“It’s the time of year again when our community comes together to ensure everyone – our friends, family and neighbours – has help when they need it,” said Rick McCombie, 2016 United Way campaign chair.
“We’re asking everyone to dig deep. Every dollar donated makes a difference to thousands of people every day, keeping our community safe and thriving.”
The kick-off took place at both St. George’s Square in downtown Guelph, and on the rooftop at the downtown Guelph Skyline offices.
Over 40 United Way funded agencies participated in an “Expo In the Square”, showcasing the breadth of services and programs funded by United Way. Local food trucks made the trip to offer lunch.
With one of the greatest views of Guelph, the Skyline rooftop welcomed Mayor Cam Guthrie and others for the big announcement.
Ken Dardano, United Way executive director, said he is excited about this year’s campaign.
“We’ve had a great run up to the start of this year’s campaign; the community has been very positive and our workplaces are excited to get started,” said Dardano.
“But the reality is that the need in our community doesn’t go away and it gets harder and harder to raise the dollars to meet those needs. We really need the community’s support this year.”
The local United Way currently funds a network of 92 programs at 57 different organizations in Guelph and Wellington and Dufferin counties. Programs support many issues, including poverty, homelessness, mental health and literacy.
The campaign runs until the end of November. Donations are accepted at workplaces across Guelph and Wellington and Dufferin counties, and through the United Way office (519-821-0571 or www.unitedwayguelph.com).
