Local resident promotes War Amps legacy

KENILWORTH – As Remembrance Day approaches Lucas Beatty, 27, of Kenilworth, recently paused for a moment of silence at a local cenotaph to commemorate the veteran members of The War Amps.

Born without a right arm, Beatty is part of Operation Legacy, in which members and graduates of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program help carry on the remembrance message.

As a member of the program, Beatty has participated in a number of War Amps activities over the years, from giving Playsafe and amputation aware-ness presentations, to laying a wreath on Remembrance Day at local services.

The War Amps was established more than 100 years ago by amputee veterans returning from the First World War to help each other adapt to their new reality. They then welcomed the next generation of amputee veterans following the Second World War.

Today, the association continues to assist all amputees across Canada, including children and veterans.
