Local farmer named VP of Beef Farmers of Ontario

The board of directors of the Beef Farmers of Ontario (BFO) elected their new president and vice president recently at BFO’s 54th Annual General Meeting held in Toronto.

Matt Bowman, northern director from Thornloe, Ontario will lead the association in the year ahead as president with Joe Hill, feedlot director from Fergus, as vice president.

Hill has served on the board for five years. He and his wife Jennifer and two children run a 200-head, short-keep feedlot operation in Centre Wellington near Fergus and Elora.

In addition, they also manage 800 acres of owned and rented land in corn, soybeans and wheat.

Bowman has been a director on the board for seven years representing northern Ontario. He and his wife Elaine farm in Thornloe with their two children, Leslie and Thomas.

Operating a Charolais based cow-calf operation with 110 cows, they also cash crop 700 acres of oats, wheat, barley and canola. To round out their operation they also have an expanding pick your own strawberry patch in the summer months.

“There are a number of important issues that I am looking forward to becoming more involved in as leader of the association. I am very focused on addressing the gaps in programs that will support the expansion of our beef herd in the province,” Bowman said.

BFO board of directors and staff welcomed over 400 attendees at this year’s AGM including a number of members of provincial Parliament.

BFO’s board of directors consists of 12 elected officials – three from the cow-calf sector, three from the feedlot sector, one from the backgrounder sector, one each representing the southern, northern and eastern regions of Ontario, and two elected at-large. Directors are elected for three-year terms on a rotating basis.
