Local distilleries part of Craft Gin Trail

WELLINGTON COUNTY – The Craft Gin Trail opened on June 11, in time for World Gin Day.

The trail, which includes six participating distilleries, provides an opportunity to try a variety of gin.

“Craft Gin Trail leads visitors to six gin distilleries about an hour’s drive outside the Greater Toronto Area in Waterloo Region, Perth County and Wellington County,” states a press release from organizers, including the distilleries, Elora and Fergus Tourism, Taste Real and Regional Tourism Organization 4.

Organizers hope more craft distilleries will join to enhance gin offerings.

“Each of the distilleries have their own unique take on the popular spirit,” states the press release.

Those interested in the Craft Gin Trail can pick up a passport from participating distilleries or online. The passport can be stamped at each location and three stamps qualifies the passport holder for a prize draw.

The six distilleries involved are:

– Elora Distilling Company;

  Silver Fox Distillery in Arthur;

– Dixon’s Distilled Spirits in Guelph;

  Spring Mill Distillery of Guelph;

– Junction 56 Distillery in Stratford; and

  Willibald Farm Distillery and Brewery in Ayr.

“The Craft Gin Trail provides another way for people to get a taste of the vibrant culinary scene this part of the province offers, and experience some beautiful, exciting destinations not too far from home,”  stated Marty Van Vleit, co-owner of the Elora Distilling Company.

He explained the trail idea stemmed from there being a high concentration of distilleries in the region making high-quality gin.

“If we work together, we can really help craft distilling shine,” said Van Vleit.

Officials at Dixon’s Distilled Spirits in Guelph, which was founded by Fergus natives, were quick to sign on when Van Vleit approached them about the idea.

“It was a really cool opportunity,” said production manager Brodie Dixon.

Silver Fox Distillery owner Lisa Townsend added,  “We’re hoping that it’s going to spark some interest.”

She added the trail should  help people realize what’s in their own backyard and encourage them to support local businesses.

Van Vleit said there is still plenty of time to try the Craft Gin Trail.
