Step up, Trudeau

Dear Editor:

An open letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

As a member of Grandmothers Act to Save the Planet (GASP), I am asking that you attend the upcoming United Nations climate conference – COP26 – in Glasgow (Nov. 1 to 12) with a detailed plan describing how Canada will meet our greenhouse gas emissions targets, stop public funding of coal, oil and natural gas expansions, and rapidly transition us into the healthy new world of climate-stabilizing green energy.

In the wake of a summer of extreme weather and wildfires in Canada, resulting in enormous human suffering and financial loss, dealing with the climate crisis is simply a matter of survival. Emissions in Canada have risen every year since we signed the Paris Agreement in 2015. Canada can and must do so much better.

As fierce advocates for our grandchildren, great grandchildren, and children everywhere, we believe they should not have to carry the weight of addressing climate devastation on their shoulders. Children the world over should not be living in fear, suffering from eco-anxiety, and begging for action from political leaders. They rightfully demand and deserve a habitable planet.

We need you to step up now and be a bold climate leader. Please, no more empty promises without meaningful action and clear accountability. We are asking you to put the needs of future generations ahead of everything else. They are the future.

Prime Minister Trudeau, you can be the catalyst mobilizing Canada and all the other nations at COP26. Please do this for the sake of all humanity.

Liz Armstrong,
Erin
