‘Public tragedy’?

Dear Editor:

We have a situation here in Mount Forest between Birmingham Lodge and the neighbouring apartments. There exists a fire lane that is blocked and barricaded.

When I informed the mayor, the fire chief and indeed the Fire Marshal of Ontario, I was told this was a private matter and of no concern to them.

Don’t public servants have a duty to protect the safety of residents and of emergency personnel? After all the apartments facing the back parking lot are many hundreds of feet away from the nearest hydrant.

We can hope this private matter won’t become a public tragedy.
