‘Fake facts’

Dear Editor:

RE: Wastewater decision will take months, Feb. 7.

Andrea Khanjin, parliamentary assistant to the Ontario Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, obviously has not listened to the IPCC, which has told the world we have at best 12 years to stop putting greenhouse gases (GHG) into the atmosphere. The Conservatives keep screaming that a carbon tax, revenue neutral or not, will make the economy and the GDP fall off a cliff.

That’s not what happened in BC. For the five years after applying the carbon tax, BC’s GDP increased more than did the Canadian GDP. In Sweden, a northern country like Canada, they introduced a carbon tax in 1991. By 2018, Sweden’s GDP per capita in purchasing power parity increased by 131%, while Canada’s increased by only 111%.

Relative to 1990, Sweden’s GHG emissions dropped by over 34% by 2012, while Canada’s increased by over 42% in the same time period.

It’s time for the Conservatives to stop spouting fake facts.

Ron Moore,
