Defending MP

Dear Editor:

RE: Sound of silence, Jan. 3.

In a recent letter, Peter van Vloten took umbrage with our MP Michael Chong sending out a 2019 calendar. He says many like him won’t find it useful, and that may be so. But when he says Michael missed an opportunity to share important information on federal programs and initiatives that benefit his constituents I guess Mr. van Vloten did not get as far as the second to last page of the calendar.

Listed there are the means to contact Michael or his constituency offices, where I am sure any eligible constituent will receive all the help they need in accessing these programs or benefits. Even some they don’t know about. They have someone to guide them through the process. Way better than just listing the programs that are available.

While I am not so sure it is Michael’s job, as an opposition member, to promote Liberal policies, I am pretty sure it is his job to make sure all his constituents know how to access these programs. And that they do, I have no doubt.

On the matter of the Summer Jobs program, I am pretty sure those who want to make use of the program are well aware of the application timeline.

What you don’t point out is that the applicants will probably find the program more user friendly than last year, thanks to the efforts of the opposition parties to force the Liberal government to eliminate last year’s restrictions.
