‘A positive change’

Dear Editor:

RE: Province: long-term care staff must be vaccinated by Nov. 15, Oct 7.

Ever since the pandemic began, long-term care facilities have strongly encouraged their employees to get vaccinated. This ensures the safety and protection of residents. The Ministry of Long-Term Care announced that by Nov. 15, long-term care workers must be vaccinated. This decision is a positive change.

Those who have read misconceptions of the vaccine and who refuse to receive it cannot enter the workplace. Proof of vaccination must be shown. Workers who are fully vaccinated can ensure the protection of long-term residents, who already have many health issues and are at high risk of contracting the delta variant. When everyone in the long-term home is vaccinated, staff and residents can both be protected and safe. Families of residents can feel more confident in their loved one’s care.

I work in a retirement home and often hear residents say that they are tired of being stuck in the home. They are bored and want their lives to return to normal. Many residents already have their third shot of the vaccine and will do whatever it takes to keep themselves, and those around them safe. They often speak out against “anti-vaxxers” and wish that everyone would receive the vaccine.

Having fully vaccinated homes means that things can change. Game rooms can open again, allowing residents to socialize. Residents’ lives will be benefited.
