The last of the 2016 census data, including education, labour and commuting information, was released on Nov. 29.
The data includes percentage of people with a high school diploma, university degree, college diploma and trades; unemployment and self employment rates; mode of commuting; average commute time and more.
In Wellington County, four of the seven municipalities are above the provincial and national percentage of people aged 24 to 64 with a high school diploma.
All seven municipalities are below the provincial and national average for unemployment rate. Five municipalities have below average commuting times.
Education
Puslinch has the highest percentage of people aged 24 to 64 with a high school diploma (89.5%) and with a bachelor’s degree or higher (32.8%). Also in Puslinch, 25.9% have a college or non-university diploma and 3.8% have an apprenticeship certificate.
In Ontario, 87.9% have a high school diploma, 31.9% have a bachelor’s degree or higher, 24.7% have a college or non-university diploma and 3.1% have an apprenticeship certificate.
In Centre Wellington:
– 88.8% have a high school diploma;
– 22.9% have a bachelor’s degree or higher;
– 29.2% have a college or non-university diploma; and
– 4.6% have an apprenticeship certificate.
In Erin:
– 89.1% have a high school diploma;
– 23.3% have a bachelor’s degree or higher;
– 38% have a college or non-university diploma; and
– 6.1% have an apprenticeship certificate.
In Guelph-Eramosa:
– 88.8% have a high school diploma;
– 25.8% have a bachelor’s degree or higher;
– 27.4% have a college or non-university diploma; and
– 5.9% have an apprenticeship certificate.
In Mapleton:
– 61% have a high school diploma;
– 10.7% have a bachelor’s degree or higher;
– 21.5% have a college or non-university diploma; and
– 5.7% have an apprenticeship certificate.
In Minto:
– 77.3% have a high school diploma;
– 9.8% have a bachelor’s degree or higher;
– 25.6% have a college or non-university diploma; and
– 6.5% have an apprenticeship certificate.
In Wellington North:
– 73.1% have a high school diploma;
– 9.8% have a bachelor’s degree or higher;
– 23.5% have a college or non-university diploma; and
– 6.3% have an apprenticeship certificate.
The census also compared data between women and men in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields.
– In Centre Wellington, 15.2% of women with a bachelor’s degree or higher studied STEM compared to 33% of men;
– In Erin, 17.4% of women studied STEM compared to 33.9% of men;
– Guelph-Eramosa, 18.1% of women and 30.1% of men;
– Mapleton, 19.7% of women and 38.6% of men;
– Minto, 13.2% of women and 34.5% of men;
-Puslinch, 25.9% of women and 35.7% of men; and
– Wellington North, 12% of women and 47.4% of men.
Labour
Mapleton had the lowest unemployment rate (2.6%) and Guelph-Eramosa had the highest at 5.1%. All municipalities were under the provincial unemployment rate of 7.4% and federal unemployment rate of 7.7%.
Puslinch had the highest rate of unemployment in people aged 15 to 24 at 16.5%.
Mapleton also had the highest percentage of people working full time at 49.2%, while Erin had the highest percentage of people working part time at 32.7%
In Centre Wellington:

– 15.2% self employed;
– 31% of work force working part time; and
– 39.8% working full time.
In Erin:
– 4.3% unemployment rate;
– 15.3% unemployment rate among people 15 to 24;
– 17.9% self employed;
– 32.7% of work force working part time; and
– 44.2% working full time.
In Guelph-Eramosa:
– 5.1% unemployment rate;
– 15.2% unemployment rate among people 15 to 24;
– 16.8% self employed;
– 31.8% of work force working part time; and
– 43.1% working full time.
In Mapleton:
– 2.6% unemployment rate;
– 6.4% unemployment rate among people 15 to 24;
– 26.4% self employed;
– 28.7% of work force working part time; and
– 49.2% working full time.
In Minto:
– 3.1% unemployment rate;
– 9.4% unemployment rate among people 15 to 24;
– 17.8% self employed;
– 29% of work force working part time; and
– 42.1% working full time.
In Puslinch:
– 4.6% unemployment rate;
– 16.5% unemployment rate among people 15 to 24;
– 21.8% self employed;
– 31.6% of work force working part time; and
– 39.1% working full time.
In Wellington North:
– 4.7% unemployment rate;
– 9.5% unemployment rate among people 15 to 24;
– 16.8% self employed;
– 28% of work force working part time; and
– 41.5% working full time.
Commuting
In all municipalities, the chosen mode of transportation to work is to drive. The use of public transit in all municipalities is far below the provincial average (14.6%) and federal average (12.4%).
Erin has the highest commute time of 35.7 average minutes (the provincial average is 28.8 minutes). Wellington North has the most people walking, biking or using another mode of transportation.
Most workers in the county leave between 7 and 7:59am, except those in Minto and Wellington North, which have more people leaving earlier.
In Centre Wellington:
– 86.7% of people drive themselves to work;

– 7% walk, bike or take other modes of transportation
– 24.8 minutes on average to get to work; and
– 10.1% work from home.
In Erin:
– 88.9% of people drive themselves to work;

– 35.7 minutes on average to get to work; and
– 12.6% work from home.
In Guelph-Eramosa:

In Mapleton:
