Insights Juried Exhibition reaches 40 years of the finest in fine art

ABOYNE – Insights Juried Exhibition of Fine Arts marks its 40th anniversary in 2019.

In honour of the occasion, the exhibition Opening Gala will be held on June 19 from 7 to 9pm at the Wellington County Museum and Archives.

Members of the public are invited to learn more about Insights, attend the free event, and participate in the People’s Choice Award as part of the awards presentation at 8pm.

“Insights not only brings artists within neighbouring communities together, but it serves as a kind of equalizer, recognizing deserving works by amateurs and professionals alike – the work itself really is the focus,” said Steven Volpe, recipient of the Insights Award in 2017.

“There is a gratifying source of validation that comes with being part of an Insights show, let alone winning an award, and as art can be such a solitary pursuit, that goes a long way.”

The Insights Juried Arts Exhibition began as part of the Fergus Fall Fair, when works were shown in the Fergus Agricultural Building.

In its founding year, 1985, the Elora Arts Council assumed the operation and funding of Insights.

Insights’ support and respect for local artists is an important objective in all aspects of the work of this volunteer organization.

“For many of the artists living and working in the Insights catchment area the annual Insights Juried Art Exhibition is the highlight of the year,” said Dick Marvin, chair of the Insights committee. “It’s an event where they as artists can pit their efforts against those of others for a chance to gain representation in the show.”

As a special event for the 40th anniversary, Insights is introducing a high school student competition.

“Bringing in work from the next generation of artists makes Insights more inclusive and diverse,” said Stephen Cole, committee member and sponsor of the award by Decadigitus Design.

“It also gives the youth a chance to interact with professional artists in our community and see what’s possible in the creative profession.

“We hope to give the students a goal to strive towards with this new endeavor.”

Twenty-four pieces selected at a separate student-only show will hang in the gallery with the professional works, where the jury will select three award recipients.

Insights 40 runs from June 19 to Sept. 1 at the Wellington County Museum and Archives.

The on-going collaboration with this historic venue has made it possible to present the show in beautiful surroundings and in a wonderful gallery.
