Icemen lobby for ice time switch

Mapleton Mayor John Green says if it were up to him, the Drayton Icemen would play their home games on Friday or Saturday nights.

Green told council last week he lobbied “for a long time” in the early 1990s for Friday night games for the village’s previous senior men’s team – the Drayton?Comets – but did not get much cooperation.

As mayor, and a fan of hockey, Green said Friday night games would attract a “different crowd of people,” than the current Sunday afternoon games at the PMD arena.

A delegation from the Drayton Icemen appeared at the township’s parks, culture and recreation committee about a month ago to request ice time on either Friday or Saturday evening, with a puck drop at 8 or 8:30pm.

Green told council he would be in favour of the request if the move was possible. Committee member and councillor Jim Curry said the committee would see what it can do.

At its meeting the committee made a recommendation to enquire with other user groups about switching ice time around to accommodate the Icemen request.

The committee is to report back to the club sometime next month.
