Guild hosts inaugural Quilts on the Grand showcase

The walls and even the pews of the St. James Anglican Church were draped with spectacular quilts during the two day Quilts on the Grand showcase.

Approximately 500 people attended the inaugural event on June 8 and 9.

“Quilters love to come to quilt shows to see what other quilters are quilting,” said Sue Foard, co-vice president of the Grand Quilt Guild, which hosted the event.

“We have had people come from the Kitchener-Waterloo area, Guelph and today I even met someone in from Ottawa.”

The event honoured the Guild’s 15th anniversary celebrations. Of the 93 active guild members, 68 members registered to participate in the show.

The event featured two storeys of quilts throughout the church, including heritage quilts, wall hangings, home decor, miniatures and clothing pieces.

More than 50 small quilted pieces were raffled off in a “Twoonie’s Treasures” event. Another small area featured merchandise for quilt supplies.

St. James’ Butterfly Garden offered visitors an area to enjoy refreshments.

“We are really pleased with the turnout this year, and hope it will grow,” said Foard. “This venue has been great to showcase the many quilts.”

Foard said the guild welcomes new members and meets from September to June on the second Wednesday of each month at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 275, 500 Blair Street, Fergus.
