National Volunteer Week is April 23 to 29.
It’s the perfect time to celebrate and thank Guelph and Wellington’s 98,000 volunteers.
Volunteer Centre of Guelph/Wellington is offering numerous opportunities for celebration.
The Dr. William Winegard Exemplary Volunteer Involvement Awards were presented to this year’s recipients:
– Yousr El Sharawy a political science masters student at the University of Guelph. She also completed her undergraduate degree as an international student at the university;
– Dr. Daniel Gillis, assistant professor and statistician in the school of computer science and the director of the physical science and engineering education research centre at the University of Guelph; and
– Paul Mesman, manager, and construction coordinator in the department of physical resources at the University of Guelph.
With support from community minded businesses, the volunteer centre provided 4,000 Caring Community Cards for distribution to volunteers who support member agencies as a thank you for their great work.
The volunteer centre will celebrate volunteerism and Canada’s 150th with its annual Time To Give Breakfast on April 28. Award-winning Canadian novelist and travel writer Will Ferguson will attend as guests explore how volunteering impacts the Canadian identity.
Rounding out the event the organization will unveil a new name and logo which more appropriately reflects the breadth of our mission, vision and values.
“To our community’s volunteers – thank you for all your efforts this past year,” officials state. “Every baked good you made, all the miles you drove, the events you hosted and the children you mentored, the elders you visited are amazing examples of this community’s special philanthropic spirit. Your willingness to participate embodies what it means to build community together. Thank you!”
The volunteer centre encourages the public to thanking volunteers on social media using #GratitudeGW.
Snap a photo of volunteers in action, or simply express your thanks for all the great work volunteers do on a daily basis, they say.
