GRCA to receive federal funding

The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) will receive grants totalling $316,750 through the Canada 150 Infrastructure Program.

That is roughly $100,000 less than the amount applied for earlier this year.

“We were very pleased to learn that our applications for the funds were approved,” said GRCA director of operations Dave Bennett.

“This support will allow us to make significant improvements to the   Apps’ Mill Nature Centre in the County of Brant, as well as the Kay Marston Pavilion at the Elora Gorge Conversation Area. We will also be restoring the FWR Dickson Nature Trail and Boardwalk just south of Cambridge.”

Work on those projects is scheduled to be completed in 2018.

The only project within Wellington County covered by the funding is the work at the Elora Gorge conservation area.

Renovation of the Kay Marston Pavilion will include the replacement of support pillar bases and posts, renovations to the kitchen facility, as well as accessibility upgrades to the existing washrooms.

The original estimated cost for this work was about $167,000.

The pavilion provides an outdoor gathering space for Elora Gorge Conservation Area visitors, community groups and organizations.

The Grand River Conservation Foundation (GRCF) is expected to assist with a portion of the GRCA’s contribution to these projects.
