Grand Gardens program will proceed after hiatus

Nominations being accepted till June 15; bragging rights are year-round

FERGUS – The Fergus and District Horticultural Society will be proceeding with the Grand Gardens program this year after a one year hiatus.

The program recognizes beautiful gardens of up to six homeowners in the area.

The Horticultural Society has decided the Grand Gardens program can be done safely following all Public Health protocols.

Garden nominations can be submitted using their email fergushorticulture@gmail.com.

The Grand Garden committee will make its selections and award homeowners with signs that identify their gardens, all safely with no contact. Timing for the program is planned for June.

“We noticed homeowners spending more time in their gardens last year,” said Joan Cuming, a committee member.

“Many garden centres told us they were caught off guard with more people buying more plants and flowers earlier in the year than previously.”

Many people may have noticed garden centres sold out by the end of May last year.

It is great to see people spending time in their gardens. It is so gratifying when you can see the fruits of your labour beautify your home and everyone else in the community gets to enjoy what you have done.

The Grand Garden program recognizes examples of creative design, colour balance, overall visual impact and curb appeal.

“Fergus is full of homes with beautiful gardens,” said Doreen Broome, another committee member.

“We make this as inclusive as possible. All homes including townhomes, semi-detached homes, even apartments are part of the selection process.”

The committee looks for:

– colour interest, meaning a good demonstration of complimentary colours including those of rocks, mulch and other non-plant materials;

– interest in texture, including texture of plants (hairy, waxy, feathery, spikes, etc.) and landscape materials;

– lighting and presence of shade work to bring out interesting textures in the garden; and

– any unique features or decorative materials that capture the eye such as pieces of art, water fountains, architectural features and hanging baskets that are part of the overall effect.

Homeowners selected receive a Grand Garden sign in their garden for the summer, a one year complimentary membership to the Fergus and District Horticultural Society, and an invitation to the Society’s monthly presentations, now done virtually.

When possible these presentations will revert back to monthly meetings.

Nominations can be submitted now until June 15. Selections will be made towards the end of June.
