Frederick Street curb island to aid turning trucks

The Frederick Street and Highway 6 intersection in Arthur will be getting a facelift this summer.

A curb island will be installed on Frederick Street, west of Highway 6 in order to accommodate large trucks making right turns.

It will mark only one lane from Frederick Street onto Highway 6 and allow the rest of the intersection to be available for trucks to turn the corner from Highway 6 onto Frederick Street, explained Wellington County construction manager Mark Eby.

The island will be constructed with a rollover curb and flat concrete that can be driven over by large trucks. It also allows snowplows to clear snow during the winter.

Another curb island will be installed in front of Sussman’s on Highway 6 with a rollover curb.

“This curb island is being installed to prevent cars from sneaking inside of a heavy truck that is waiting to make the right turn then squishing the car when it turns the corner,” said Eby.

Paul Ziegler of Triton Engineering said they are still waiting on Ministry of Transportation approval before they finalize details, such as timelines and cost.

Work is expected to take place this summer.
