Fireworks display moves to raceway

The Lions Club here has hosted a Victoria Day Fireworks at the Elora community centre annually since 1958.

This year, the fireworks display is being moved to the Grand River Raceway.

The Grand River Agricultural Society has offered its large viewing area for the Elora Lion’s Club annual fireworks display at the racetrack.

The other major change this year is to the date. The show moves to the weekend of Saturday, on May 23. Normally the fireworks have been held on the Monday of the Victoria long weekend. That has worked for Elora Lion’s Club volunteers who may have been away for the long weekend, but return in time to help out with the Victoria Day fireworks.

But the Monday night of that weekend has never been helpful for parents with children who have to attend school the next morning. As a result, many children have been unable to attend the fireworks display. By moving the date of the fireworks to the following Saturday, the club hopes the scheduling will make it better for families.

This year the Elora Lions are increasing the entertainment for children by bringing in Funky Mamas, who will start the program at 8pm.

The Elora Lions will continue with their advance collection commencing the week of April 27. All money raised will go to the construction of a boardwalk in Bissell park adjacent the Grand River.

This year the Elora Lions are asking for a donation of $10 a family.
