ELORA - Elements Casino at the Grand River Raceway here will be closed by March 17 as a precaution for the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Please be advised that a temporary shutdown of all Ontario casinos has begun, including our partners at [Elements Casino]," states a Grand River Raceway tweet posted at about 4:20pm on March 15.

"We will provide more specifics about our site as they become available."

The local confirmation came shortly after the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) announced it will be closing all casinos in the province.

"The health and safety of casino customers and employees is a priority for OLG and its service providers," states the press release.

"OLG, working with all our casino service providers, is confirming that an orderly shutdown of all casinos across Ontario has begun. We expect the closure to be complete within approximately 24 hours."

It is unclear when the casinos will open, but the OLG said it will base its decision on "guidance from public health authorities."
