Ed Video in jeopardy

GUELPH – A media arts centre in Guelph has started a GoFundMe account in the hopes of raising money to keep the centre afloat.

“The combination of COVID fall-out and arts funding decline has created a situation where we won’t be able to provide all the amazing opportunities we have offered in the past, without significant help,” Ed Video officials state in a press release.

“Our goal is to raise $20,000 so that we may continue supporting artists from the Guelph, Fergus, Elora, Kitchener, Cambridge, Waterloo and New Hamburg area.”

Organizers started the GoFundMe account on Jan. 12 and have already received $10,000 in donations, which is heart-warming, they say.

Ed Video is a non-profit media arts centre that has operated for almost 50 years.

It offers about 120 learning activities annually that are aimed at helping artists develop both production and business skills.

It is the only media arts centre between London, Hamilton, and Toronto and draws membership and audiences for exhibitions, events and experiential learning.

Ed Video also rents equipment at affordable prices, commissions new media art projects and encourages artists to try new mediums and use new equipment.

“Keeping equipment available to artists is a core part of being a production centre and after the last four years we have reached a point of jeopardy,” officials state.

“$20K would ease the immediate pressure on Ed Video and allow us to focus on the long-term evolution of the organization. We aim to continue cultivating artists and creating community through workshops, mentorship programs, exhibitions and skill building services and technologies.”
