Dr. John Stickney retiring from Groves hospital after 43 years

ABOYNE – After 43 years of hard work and dedication to his staff and patients at Groves Memorial Community Hospital (GMCH), Dr. John Stickney is retiring.

The ER physicians at GMCH donated $10,000 to the hospital’s foundation in honour of Stickney.

And a plaque was presented at a small farewell gathering at the hospital on March 12.

“The physicians at GMCH wanted to do something for Dr. Stickney because he has done so much for us,” stated Dr. Eric Oh, of the Groves ER, in a press release.

“We appreciate all his hard work and dedication over the years, and he will surely be missed here.”

Stickney gathered with his family and colleagues early last Friday morning (March 12) for the unveiling of his plaque, located at the emergency department care desk.

He has created a legacy as a doctor in the emergency department and has touched the lives of many in the community, a hospital press release states.

“I think back over those 40 years – our original emergency department was the size of the recovery room at Legacy Groves,” said Stickney as he recollected his time at the old hospital.

“Can you imagine us working over there now?

“Thank you, thank you, thank you – I couldn’t think of doing anything better than to donate funds to the foundation because there’s always going to be a need at the hospital.”
