Division Street to be closed and sold

Guelph-Eramosa council moved to close parts of the road allowance known as Division Street in Rockwood at its meeting on Oct. 6.

The portion of the road scheduled for closure is located northwest of 204 and 210 Alma Street and has been deemed by the township as not suitable for opening and future highway purposes or the surplus needs of the township.

A courtesy notice was sent to area residents informing them of the closure and none have come forward in opposition.

Mayor Chris White said many of these awkward streets were originally created in the 19th century and therefore don’t align with modern development.

“These were mapped out in 1856 and some of them go right into the Grand Canyon,” he said.

“This is an example of one you would never, ever build. It’s up in a commercial area so there’s a possibility of turning it into a larger lot for some folks.”

The closure and subsequent sale of the allowance will not restrict access to the surrounding properties and revenue incurred from the sale will be put back into the roads budget.
