Council takes anti-bullying pledge

Council here has taken a pledge to end bullying.

Recreation services manager Matthew Lubbers asked Minto council to take the pledge at the Dec. 4 meeting, noting in a report, “bullying is an issue that is present in all levels of community across Canada.”

The pledge initiated with a community task force on anti-bullying in Thames Valley in 2010. In the fall of 2011, more than 70,000 members of the Thames Valley community took the pledge.

In October 2012 a new website was designed to encourage individuals and organizations across southwestern Ontario to join the movement.

As of Nov. 23, more than 128,000 online pledges had been made.

Now Minto council’s numbers will be added to the list of those who have taken the pledge, which reads, “I believe that everyone has the right to live in a community where they feel safe, included, valued and accepted regardless of differences. I pledge to be respectful of others and stand up against bullying whenever and wherever I see it.”
