Council hears concerns about Francis Street water runoff

Water runoff issues have been plaguing one resident on Francis Street East in Arthur for a number of years.

Judy Watt addressed Wellington North council on Sept. 12 to see if anything could be done about the issue.

Watt explained she brought the issue forward to township staff in 2010, after her basement and property were flooded.

“We started getting flooded from the runoff in the spring and any rain,” she said to council.

“It never gets into the … drain at the end of the street because the road is slanted so far on our side of the road that it all comes down in my yard, in my basement a couple times.”

Watt said she thought Francis Street East was going to be reconstructed in 2016 and wondered why it wasn’t.  “Do you have any intent of doing our road? I was told it was supposed to be done this year,” she said.

Mayor Andy Lennox explained the road was not in the 2016 budget because the township did not receive funding.

“We’re starting to invest more money into rebuilding streets and doing infrastructure improvement that we’ve been needing for a long period of time,” said Lennox.

“But we need some help from our other levels of government. Last year we put in an application for Francis Street for funding and [we were] not successful for that particular project.”

He added, “The Eliza Street project we did get funding for. We try to put priority on those projects that we can get funding for.”

Public works director Matt Aston confirmed there were already drawings and approval for the reconstruction of Francis Street East.

Lennox and councillor Dan Yake assured Watt Francis Street would be discussed during 2017 budget meetings.

“Is Francis Street going to be a priority?” asked Watt.

Lennox replied, “It was right at the top of the list last year; it’s going to be near the top of the list this year.”
