Council approves speed limit changes on seven Wellington County roads
Speed limit reduction coming to Wellington Road 22 before planned Highway 6 roundabout
GUELPH – Seven county roads will see speed limit changes after Wellington County council passed a new bylaw on May 28.
Four changes involve school zones – in Ponsonby, Moorefield, Elora and Fergus – one extends a speed limit to a hamlet boundary, and two changes are requests from the province and Guelph.
The Ministry of Transportation requested a new 60km/h speed limit on Wellington Road 22 about half a kilometre from a future roundabout at Highway 6 to replace the problematic Highway 6/Wellington Road 22 intersection.
Guelph is reducing the speed limit on its section of Arkell Road for a new Two Rivers Secondary School slated to open this fall and requested the county add a 50km/h zone on its portion of Arkell Road.
A reduction from 70km/h is intended to encourage drivers to slow down before crossing the Victoria Road South intersection, into the new school zone.
Other changes include:
- unifying a mix of 60, 70, and 80 km/h zones around Ponsonby Public School on Wellington Road 7 into one 60km/h zone, running 150 metres southeast of 8th Line to 500m northwest of Sideroad 14;
- ending 40 and 50km/h zones around Maryborough Public School in Moorefield at Booth Street instead of north of Parkview Drive;
- extending a 50 km/h zone on Wellington Road 17 in Alma, south to the hamlet’s urban boundary to smooth speed transition into the hamlet;
- extending toward Gerrie Road 40km/h and 60km/h zones on Wellington Road 18 around Elora Public School; and
- extending a 40km/h into a shortened 70km/h zone on Wellington Road 19 nearby Maranatha Christian School.
